Iker Lecuona was furious after being asked to surrender to Raul Fernandez on the second day of the MotoGP test at the Misano Circuit, Wednesday (22/9/2021)
The Tech3 racer finished the first day of testing in 20th place. After that, he received the news that he could not drive the next day because his motorbike was used by Fernandez, his successor for next season.
Instead of being a spectator, Lecuona chose to go home with the earliest flight to Spain.
"My flight leaves tomorrow morning (Wednesday, ed) at 06.00, so I'm not here anymore," he said.
"I'm too lazy to talk about it. But, this situation is disappointing, I don't understand. I don't support it but have to accept it.
“Today, we did our maximum work regardless of the morning conditions. So let's see where we are in the second race at Misano."
The opposite attitude is shown by Danilo Petrucci. Since there are no new components brought by KTM, he is not too curious. For the Italian, Remy Gardner didn't mind riding his motorbike.
“Gardner is a good rider and every day, on the bike, is like a relief to him. We don't have any new elements or special things to try in the test, so it's not very useful for me.
“The test is more useful if Remy controls the bike. I want to try the Dakar bike, but it's not possible. I have to wait until December for that,” he explained.
The difference in response between Lecuona and Petrucci could be influenced by KTM's decision about their future.
The two-time MotoGP winner will still be a member of the Austrian manufacturer's family in 2022. However, he was relegated to the Dakar Rally. The event he had dreamed of for a long time.
Lecuona is still gloomy. The 21-year-old racer could not appear in MotoGP because all the seats were filled. Chances are staying in World Superbike with Honda. He will partner with Xavi Vierge, who this season is in Moto2.
Meanwhile, Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 driver Fernandez initially wanted to join Petronas SRT. He considered it more suitable to ride a Yamaha motorcycle.
Because of that, Fernandez half-heartedly accepted the proposal of Tech3 and KTM which tied him for the next two seasons.
