Lewis Hamilton's dramatic victory at the Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix saw him take over from the leader of the standings from Max Verstappen.
Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1) managed to shift Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing-Honda) from the top of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship drivers standings.
It was a dramatic victory that the seven-time F1 world champion (2008, 2014, 2015, 2017-2020) won at the Russian Grand Prix which took place at the Sochi Autodrom Circuit, Sunday (26/9/2021).
Even so, praise should be addressed to Verstappen and Red Bull who performed extraordinary. Starting from the most distended position due to the change of a number of components in the power unit (PU), he was also punished with starting from the most distended position.
Mercedes' tactic of "putting" Valtteri Bottas behind to hold Verstappen - by changing PU as well - did not work optimally. The Dutch racer managed to add 18 points after finishing P2, just behind Hamilton.
Bottas himself had to settle for finishing fifth at the Russian GP under Hamilton, Verstappen, Carlos Sainz Jr (Scuderia Ferrari), and Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren-Mercedes).
With an additional 25 points from the victory in Sochi, Hamilton is now back at the top of the drivers' standings with seven races remaining.
If previously the British racer was five points behind Verstappen at the top, now Hamilton is only two points ahead of the 23-year-old racer. This is also the third time Hamilton has managed to lead the standings, alternating with Verstappen.
Hamilton led the standings at the start of the season, from the Bahrain Grand Prix to the Spanish Grand Prix (1st to 4th series). Verstappen then shifted him after the Monaco GP (5th series) to the British GP (10).
Hamilton then again took over the standings after the Hungarian GP (11) to the Belgian GP (12). Verstappen answered Hamilton's challenge by reclaiming P1 standings after the Dutch GP (13) to the Italian GP (14). Now, Hamilton is back on top after the Russian GP (15).
Meanwhile, the third to fifth place in the standings did not change. Bottas, Lando Norris (McLaren-Mercedes), and Sergio Perez (Red Bull Racing Honda), are in P3 to P5, respectively.
Sainz, who finished third on the podium in Sochi, managed to move his teammate, Charles Leclerc, from P6. Leclerc, who also started from the most distended position due to the change of PU components, did not get points at the Russian GP because he finished in P15.
The rankings of Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri-Honda), and 2005-2006 world champion Fernando Alonso (Alpine-Renault) are also unchanged, remaining P8 to P10. Gasly failed to win points after finishing in P13 while Alonso reaped 8 points after entering P6.
